Having sent a newspaper search request to the ND State Library, I located the name of the magazine contest that Mandan, ND female photographer Margaret Wilder Welch won in 1905.  Attached here is a photocopy of that article from the May 5, 1905 Mandan Pioneer. The article misspells the publisher’s, Hicks’, first name. “Irl” R. Hicks wrote an almanac as well. Let me know if anyone finds a copy of this. I don’t know which month it would have been published with her photos.  It appears from WorldCat that there are only a few libraries with this periodical – Marietta [Ohio} College, Brigham Young University and possibly Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.   So, It may have been anywhere from January 1905 through the end of the year – perhaps even into 1906.  And, with the inaccuracies of news articles such as this, the photos may have actually turned up in Hicks’ 1905 or 1906 Almanac and not his magazine.  By the way, $25 in 1905 was roughly the equivalent of about $1000 today. That definitely makes it sound more significant, doesn’t it?
